International Centre for North East Studies

The International Centre for North East Studies, Synod College was launched by the Hon’ble Member of Parliament (former Union Minister of State), Shri Vincent H. Pala on July 30, 2016 at the College Auditorium.

The Centre was set up with the aim:

  1. To analyse relevant and innovative research areas in North-East India
  2. To integrate multidisciplinary approaches in undertaking research
  3. To foster research networks at the local, regional, national and international levels

The International Centre for North East Studies will function:

  1. as a centre to harmonise research and publication
  2. t will encourage faculty and departments to engage in research in various facets of North-East India that are of societal concern
  3. it will document, preserve and spread the invaluable wealth of knowledge and understanding about North-East India
  4. it will be a channel to liaise with other centres and organizations pursuing similar academic and research interests in North-East India
  5. it will be a centre to promote development of public policy concepts and policy alternatives

Areas of Work

To begin with the International Centre for North East Studies will primarily work in the following areas:

  1. Climate Change and Sustainability
  2. Governance
  3. Culture Studies and Tribal/Indigenous Peoples
  4. Human Rights

Activities

  1. At present the centre has undertaken three research projects for the session 2016-2017.
  2. Khasi culture as a model for Eco-Leadership – Dr. Charles Reuben Lyngdoh and Shri. Banshaikupar Lyngdoh Mawlong.
  3. Urban Governance: A Study of the JNNURM scheme in Shillong with special focus on the bus facilities provided via the scheme- Dr. Dhiraj K. Borkotoky
  4. Memoirs of (L) Shri. E.K. Mawlong, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya – Dr. Dhiraj K. Borkotoky
