Botany Department:

Synod College, Shillong established the Pre-degree Course known as Pre-University Science (P.U. Sc) in 1987. Dr. B. Wankhar and Shri. S. Jyrwa were appointed as the full-time faculties in the Department. Shri S. Jyrwa was the Head of the Department from inception till 2010. In 1992, the Degree pass course was introduced and upgraded to honours level in 1995. The first batch of P.U. Science students appeared in 1989 and the result was cent per cent. In subsequent years the overall result was always above average. Since the introduction of the B.Sc. Pass Course in 1992, the result has always been above the University pass percentage. In the year 2018 Dr. B. Wankhar retired from her dedicated service followed by Smt. F.S. Khonglah in the year 2019.

In 2015, the college was granted the DBT-Star College Scheme sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India and under this scheme the department has been able to purchase scientific instruments and carry out various activities such as minor students’ projects, outreach programmes, science exhibitions, study tours, etc.
